Mazda . How to Use an Ohmmeter to Check a Car BatteryElectrical problems are among the most difficult and often the most costly repairs on a car. There are virtually miles of wiring that make up the wiring harness in a modern automobile. Fuses and fusible links in the wiring harness that are designed to burn through in the case of an electrical problem are often buried deep within the vehicle's tangled mass of wiring. The mechanic must attempt to eliminate the most easily reached components before delving into the wiring behind the dash and in the engine compartment. The battery is typically the first stop on the exploration; you can use an ohmmeter to check the car battery. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Wrench Battery terminal cleaner Ohmmeter Step by Step : 1 Open the hood of the vehicle. Use a wrench to remove the battery cables from the battery, then loosen the retaining bracket bolt from the battery box. Lift the battery out of its mounting location, and place it on a workbench. 2 Clean the battery terminals by placing a terminal cleaner over each battery post. Remove the corrosion and oxidation with a twisting motion until the terminals are clean and shiny. 3 Test the battery. Place the red probe from an ohmmeter on the positive (+) battery post. Place the black probe on the negative (-) battery post. Read the needle on the meter. A reading of 12.43 volts shows that you have a low but working charged battery. A battery that is completely charged and in proper working order will read 12.66 volts on the meter. Any meter reading of less than 12.43 volts tells you that you have a battery that needs charging. A reading that maximizes the meter's needle or any nonreading indicates a bad battery that you should replace. Tips & Warnings Always remove the positive cable first. This will prevent sparking and damage to your vehicle. Never use a quick charger on a dead battery. It will damage the cell plates. Instead, use a trickle (slow) charger.
Mazda . How to Check Car Battery Voltage With a DMMAn automotive battery provides electrical energy for vehicle starting, and serves as the electrical return (also known as "ground") for the entire electrical system. Since the battery plays such an important role in the operation of an automobile, it is necessary to test the battery periodically. One important test is a voltage check. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Digital multimeter Step by Step : 1 Turn on the multimeter. Set the meter scale to "DC Voltage." 2 Place the negative (black) meter probe on the negative battery post. Place the positive (red) meter probe on the positive battery post. 3 Read the multimeter display; the battery voltage differential should be approximately 12.6 volts DC. Tips & Warnings If the multimeter leads are inadvertently reversed, the voltage reading on the multimeter will be a negative number. *same size as your old one, take it back. If you have another way of getting to the auto supply store, just remove the hose, following the instructions later in this section, and take it with you so that the auto supply store can match it. If you must drive your car, here's how find the right hose without a sample on hand: If it's a top radiator hose; Don't get a radiator hose that has wire inside it. Radiator hoses have to bend to fit properly between the radiator and whatever they lead to. Some hoses are straight tubes, with wire coiled inside the rubber casing. These are called universal hoses; they're designed to bend to fit many cars. Often, the wire breaks or works its way through the top covering of the hose, causing the hose to leak. The kind of hose to look for is called a preformed hose, shown in Figure 14-5, which is made with the proper bend already in it and no wire inside the rubber. Chapter 14: Keeping Your Car from Getting Heartburn 2 t Figure 14-5: A preformed radiator hose. The hose should be squeezable — another reason that you don't want a top radiator hose with wire inside. This way, if you have problems with your cooling system, you can squeeze the hose to see whether the system is operating under pressure. A dangerously pressurized hose that's hard to squeeze warns you not to remove the radiator cap until the car cools down and the pressure is reduced. If it's a bottom radiator hose: The hose must have a wire coil inside it to 698
